It’s been too long. The options for a post are literally limitless. I’ve gone back and forth between several options, but finally decided on looking at the fusion of video games and the silver screen … is it still silver?
Recently I finished watching Fallout.
Stand-along it was fun. When you couple it with the decades of video game experience it suddenly became that much more powerful.
I haven’t played all of the Fallout games, but I’ve played my fair share and with each installment have slipped in without any major issues. I played the first couple turn-based offerings and most recently ingrained myself in Fallout 3. I have to admit, number 3 held a place dear to my heart as it was set in Boston. I relished the chance to visit Quincy … even though it was slightly different from the city of my youth.
So we look at Prime’s Fallout.
I watched the first season through and have to say I love it. The show took the world built by the Fallout games and built on them to the point where they somehow managed to flesh out the world created in the hundreds of hours of gameplay.
Characters were deep. The world was deeper. The show somehow took everything you knew from the games and expounded on that framework to blow your minds wide open.
So, how does this stack up against other video game adaptations?
To be frank, it might be one of the best offerings to date.
There are countless examples, from Street Fighter to Wing Commander to Mario Brothers. What we have seen is a mixed bag. Sometimes it makes us laugh. Other times it makes us cringe. More often than not we are left with a raised eyebrow and a shrug as we wrap up a movie or show based on a game.
All that to say, Fallout hits the spot.
Check it out when you have the chance. It might even inspire you to load up the latest game on you console and dive into the post-nuclear wasteland. Enjoy it.
On that vein, tell me what you favorite game adaptation is. There are more than you realize. You might not even realize that your favorite game has a screen format. Do a little research and hopefully you are left with a little smile on your face.
In the meantime keep on reading, keep on blowing out your imagination, and keep on flying the Black.
